Kapa Haka leadership #6
On Friday Kapa Haka was cancelled because of the year 4 sleepover, I am going to say what I have learned and enjoyed during Kapa Haka this year. Technology Must Do #1
Today was the first rotation on woodwork for me. We started with the rules, such as no talking when the teacher is talking...Next we made the plans of what we wanted to make, I decided to make a tray for my family because we don't have a tray and it would come in handy. Then we had to draw our design from the front, the side, the top and a 3D drawing, and this is just some of the stuff we did. I showed respect by following the rules the class made at the start. I showed leadership by helping the people who didn't know how to draw a 3D design. I was a role model by contributing to the class discussion.

Parliament
Parliament
This term we have been learning about Parliament. We have looked at the difference between government and parliament, NZ parliament, who is in government, how our government works and we compared democracy to dictatorship.
Three things that I learned are NZ parliament are:
- The speaker can kick people out if they talk over him.
- Democracy is better than dictatorship.
- The clerk is the person the speaker looks for if he forgets/dos not know a law.
Here is the link to my compare and contrast map explaining the difference between democracy and dictatorship.

Peer mediation distinction 3
Today I did peer mediation in the morning because I couldn't do it at lunch as the talent show was on and I had money to go. I filled in for Caleb in Savannahs group because he forgot and we couldn't find him. We got lots of problems but all of them were injuries so we had to take them to a duty teacher so that teacher could give the kid a pass to the sick bay. I showed active thinking for getting someone to fill in for me because I couldn't do it. I showed leadership by doing a different duty to blog about it, and help out Savannah sort of. I was being a role model because I was being nice to the little kids so they could be nice to others because they look up to the big kids and want to be us when they are older.
I can take action to improve the water cycle in Canterbury
I can take action to improve the water cycle in Canterbury
In this project I was working with Natasha and we decided to create a water filter.
In this project we decided that our success criteria were:
Overall our project met/do not meet this criteria because...It was strong, long lasting, it works in all areas (portable), produces drinkable water and we had all the right materials.
A good water filter needs...
|
Why is this important?
|
The right materials for the job
|
So we can make a good water filter.
|
Needs to produce drinkable water
|
Because if the water wasn’t drinkable you would get sick if you drank it.
|
Needs to be strong
|
So it doesn't break and it can carry all the water and rocks inside it.
|
Needs to last for as long as possible
|
Because the water filter would be useless if it only worked for one lot of water.
|
Needs to work in all areas
|
Other wise you would have to leave it in the same area and you might need it somewhere else

Peer mediation distinction can do #2
On Friday I did peer mediation. I was supposed to do it on Wednesday but the year 7/8s were doing koru games and so I couldn't, so I did it on Friday. I did it with Sophie because she was supposed to do it on Thursday and we both wanted to blog about it so we did peer mediation on a different day together. We went around the whole school and we had no problems but we still helped some little kids who didn't have anyone to play with. I showed leadership by doing peer mediation on a different day to help out. I showed community by helping the kids that didn't have anyone to play with. I was being a role model to the other students by doing my leadership role properly.
Kapa Haka distinction can do #1
On Friday at 10:30 the Kapa Haka group had a practice like every other week. We practiced a new song we are working on for the gala and more, normally we practice 3 songs because we were practicing for the cultural festival but now it's over so we are doing those 3 songs and 2 more, one of them we already know and the other we did a few years ago so we have to learn it again. I showed leadership by helping the other kids to learn the actions because I remember them from when I was little. I showed respect by listening to Matua while he was talking. I was being a role model because I wasn't making fun of the actions and the Maori culture.

Koru Games
The activity I did was volleyball. My two highlights from Koru games were... 1. I liked being in the A team because I had some of my friends in that team. 2. We had lots of spare time so we could chill out with our other friends. I am proud of making the A team even though I have NEVER played volleyball before. Next year I want to play volleyball again because I had fun this year.

Kapa Haka leadership excellence 20
Today I did Kapa Haka. I found it way more fun today because we were learning two new songs. One of them was Ka waiata, witch we sing every time we go to Te reo on a Friday so most of the Kapa Haka group know it. The second song is tenei matou witch is the song we sung a few years ago in the Kapa Haka so I know it and most of the actions. I showed leadership by showing some of the kids what the actions were. I showed respect by listening to Matua and respecting what he says.

Kapa Haka Excellence 18
On Tuesday night the Oaklands school Kapa Haka went to horn castle arena to perform in the cultural festival. I am in the Kapa Haka group and I can say most of us were very nervous to perform but excited at the same time. We had to be there by 6:00pm but we were the last performance and the cultural festival started at 6:40pm. We had no practices on the night but in the day we came to see what it was like and practice but we only got 9 minutes! Finally we are on the stage and performing our first song, everyone is going great and just like that the performance is over there is heaps of people clapping and cheering and that's when everyone smiles. Then another school comes on with us and we both sing he honore and after that a good song come on and everyone danced!! I showed leadership by trying my best and showing a good example to the other people that are younger that me in the Kapa Haka group, I was getting involved by joining the Kapa Haka group and performing.

For reading I have been learning about adverbial clauses. I have found this learning mostly easy but a little bit hard because I feel that I knew a lot about the topic.
In this activity (link to adverbial clause activity), I had to find the adverbial clause in the sentence.
Infomation report
Water Cycle
The water cycle is a process that goes between land sea and atmosphere. The water cycle changes state in the process into gas, liquid and solid. The steps in the water cycle are evaporation, condensation, precipitation and runoff/groundwater.
One very important part of the water cycle is evaporation. Evaporation is when the sun draws up water to the sky and then turns into a gas and as we know a cloud. The water cycle is an invisible process so when the sun draws up water you can't see it. On hot days more water gets evapt because the hotter the sun the more water gets draw up to the sky and turned into a gas. When warm air with lots of water vapour in it moves into a colder place it causes the water vapour to turn into water which we know as rain. The steps in the water cycle are evaporation, condensation, precipitation and runoff/groundwater but the all need each other.
Condensation is when the water vapour is stuck outside in the cold and can't get drawn up to the sky so it tries to get inside where it is warm and that is condensation we see on our windows. And precipitation is when it rains, when the evaporation water/gas gets too full and starts falling and when it gets closer to the ground it turns into water and when it's higher up it might turn into snow or ice, because it's colder up. After condensation/precipitation is runoff/groundwater.
Runoff/groundwater is nothing more than water running off the land surface. Some water soaks into the ground but most goes over the land. Runoff is also important because the water that goes under the ground could water some roots of a tree and keep it from dying and keeping the environment healthy. Once the water that went over the land goes back into the sea this process starts again.
In the water cycle there are 3 key facts about it, number 1 is that water is always recycled we never get new water because when it rain it's from the sea and the sea water is from when it rains! Number 2 is that the water cycle never ends or starts it just keeps going around like a circle. Number 3 is that there are 3 forms in the water cycle liquid, solid and gas. The gas is when it's a cloud in the sky, the liquid is when it's raining or in the sea, and it's a solid if it snows or ice.

Kapa Haka Leadership Excellence 17
On Friday we did Kapa Haka, all of us were pretty nervous because the cultural festival was right around the corner. But the good thing was that a few classes came in and watched us. Firstly some of the Kauri students came in and watched us and the feed back they had was to be louder, so we took that in. Secondly some of the junior students came in and we took the kauri students advice in and did our whole performance louder but the thing is the junior students all covered their ears and thought it was too loud! I showed leadership because I was quite in our transitions and in the gaps we had to wait in. I showed active thinking by handing out the poi because Mr Brown was busy.
Peer Mediation Excellence 16
Today I did peer mediation and normally I would do it with Jack and Elizabeth but Jack was away, and Elizabeth had a talent show audition so I asked Sophie if she could fill in and she could! Firstly we walked to to the office to get a few pozis to hand out, secondly we walked around the field and lastly we went around the junior area and the courts. I showed leadership because I stepped up and because my group was away I asked Sophie to do it. I showed excellence because when we found a physical argument so we went to a teacher because peer mediators are NOT allowed to deal with physical arguments.

Peer Mediation Can Do 15
Today I did peer mediation. We had a meeting for the people doing te hapua so they could change because they couldn't do it on Friday because of te hapua but my group hasn't changed yet but that is good because I like my group and they turn up most o the time so I am happy. I showed respect by not walking through peoples games so that I don't interrupt them. I was also showing integrity by not just letting Elizabeth do all the work.

Kapa Haka Can Do 14
On Friday we did kapa haka and we have started to do way longer practices because the cultural festival is coming up. We went through our performance a few times and the last time some of the staff members came to watch. We also got our uniforms and tried them on and while some people were doing that we sang some cool songs. I showed leadership by not being annoying while everyone was getting their uniforms. I showed excellence by waiting quietly until I got my uniform.
Peer Mediation Can Do 13
Today I did peer mediation and it worked way better because the peer mediators (some of them) went to the junior assembly and told them what we do and what we look like so people came up to us instead of us having to ask them. I showed Leadership by reminding my group that our peer mediation is that day and I showed respect by not laughing at the peoples problems.

WALT: Apply the techniques of improvisation to a range of different scenarios.
Improvisation TECHNIQUES that I have used successfully are, thinking on the spot, and making something up.
Improvisation TECHNIQUES that I would like to have more practice at is, making my act more enthusiastic.
The thing that I enjoyed most about this unit of learning was learning all the fun games and doing them and watching others do it because I like a bit of funny moments and stuff.
The thing that I found most challenging during this unit of learning was that the audience tells you what to act because this would mean you would NOT Be able to practice.
My favorite improvisation game was family photo because we could chose the setting.
My next step/ something I need to work on further in improvisation is letting the audience choose what for me to do just like normal improv people do because I could learn what it was actually like.
Peer mediation Can do 10
Today I did peer mediation and it was easy because we didn't have to use the field because it was shut. We solved a couple problems but we couldn't solve them because the i pad is broken. I showed leadership by solving the problems and not just ignoring the little kids that had the little tiny problems. I think I showed active thinking because I remembered my duty.
WALT: I can recognize and understand the features and structures of a wide variety of text types and forms.
The text types that we studied were:
- Poems.
- Stories/ narratives.
- Articles
- Websites
- Each text type has different structures and features because: The stories are different genres and if they were the same they would become boring because people like stuff that are different.
- Two text types that I have enjoyed learning about are websites and poems

My CARE Progress
I have done a check of my CARE progress so far this year.
I am proud of my progress because I have been recording most of my ticks and remembering.
I,m REALLY close to my bronze.
The area of CARE that I need to try harder in C / A / R / E, because it's harder to get ticks on E.
To achieve my BRONZE/SILVER award quicker I need to, stay focused on my E.
The one thing that I can do to improve my progress in CARE is to try even harder to remember to record them and that should be easy now that I can do it myself.
We will review CARE progress again at the end of the term.

Kapa Haka Can Do 9
Today I had to leave early from kapa haka again because I have to walk down to Te Hapua after kapa haka every week but I think this was the last time doing that. On Wednesday I did peer mediation, we solved heaps of problems, but we couldn't fill them in because Sophie had to fill in for me and someone bumped into her and she dropped the I pad so we couldn't fill it in. We walked around the junior area, then the field then the courts and stuff, I showed excellence by remembering my duty and not making up excuses. I showed leadership by helping people and being nice and respecting their problems.

Peer Mediation Can Do 7
Today I did peer mediation and I didn't solve any problems AGAIN! (well not ones we had to record anyway) We walked around EVERYWHERE but especially the junior area because 1. they are cuter, 2. they have more problems and they are more sensitive. I showed respect by not being mean and just saying to bad when someone had a problem. I showed leadership by just doing the job even though I really wanted to play tag with all of my friends.
